HORIZON EUROPE | ETERNAL CASE STUDY: Membranes for Streamlined Solvent Exchange

April 28, 2026

Within the EU-funded ETERNAL project, where Asphalion serves as the regulatory partner, supporting the consortium to ensure alignment with regulatory frameworks while fostering sustainability and innovation, this case study by AstraZeneca explores the use of Organic Solvent Nanofiltration (OSN) technology to improve solvent exchange processes in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Solvent exchange is a critical but traditionally energy-intensive step, often relying on distillation. OSN offers a more sustainable alternative by enabling separation at ambient temperature without phase changes, significantly reducing energy consumption, solvent waste, and carbon footprint.

Key Benefits of OSN Technology:
• Energy efficiency: Operates at low temperatures without energy-intensive phase changes
• Reduced environmental impact: Lower solvent waste and CO₂ emissions
• Operational efficiency: Streamlined processes with reduced downtime
• Real-time monitoring: Enhanced control through integrated FTIR technology

This approach has demonstrated strong potential, with results showing significant reductions in energy demand and environmental impact compared to conventional methods. Hybrid strategies combining OSN and distillation are also being explored to further optimize performance.

The technology is currently being scaled up and validated at pilot level, reinforcing its potential to enable more sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

HORIZON EUROPE | siNPAIN 8th progress meeting

The objective of this project is to create a siRNA-combined advanced therapy, which will allow a more personalised treatment for the different stages of osteoarthritis. All siNPAIN partners are working hard to develop an efficient therapy to improve the quality of life of those affected by osteoarthritis, a chronic joint condition that affects more and more people every year.
