HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT | KeratOPrinter 2nd update Meeting

Corneal blindness affects over 11.7 million people worldwide, yet only 1 in 70 patients receive a corneal transplant due to a severe donor shortage. The KeratOPrinter project aims to address this gap by developing a groundbreaking 4D bioprinting suite capable of producing fully functional, biocompatible human corneas. Combining expertise from world-class partners, the project focuses on scalable cell sources, advanced bioinks, high-precision bioprinting, clinical handling solutions, regulatory compliance, and a strong collaborative network. By 2035, KeratOPrinter seeks to revolutionize corneal transplantation and restore vision for millions.

Last week in Utrecht, we joined the partners of the KeratOPrinter project at the 2nd Update Meeting, hosted by UMC Utrecht, to discuss the latest advances in the development of a 3D bioprinted corneal cell therapy.

ASPHALION, a proud regulatory partner in KeratOPrinter, was represented by Diego Sanoja (ASPHALION MedTech) and Jon Giblin, who presented the regulatory roadmap for the development and discussed regulatory strategy.

The meeting was packed with scientific and technological progress from all work packages, with partners presenting their latest advances, and alignment on the next steps to advance the development of the therapy was reached.

A big thank you to UMC Utrecht for their hospitality and for hosting an exciting and dynamic meeting.
