Asphalion was pleased to participate in the HYDROHEAL General Assembly, held on June 9–10 in Turin at I3P and hosted by Politecnico di Torino.
Representing Asphalion, our MedTech experts Diego Sanoja and Josefa Güiles contributed actively to the consortium discussions, leading the sessions on Work Packages 15–17. These focused on the ethical, regulatory, economic, and societal implications of the project—key aspects to ensure the successful translation of the hydrogel technology toward TRL 5.
Bone atrophy and fractures—often caused by trauma, infection, osteoporosis, or cancer—remain a major global health issue. Current treatments such as bone cement and grafts have important limitations, including complications linked to synthetic materials like polymethyl methacrylate.
The HYDROHEAL project is addressing these challenges by developing safe, sustainable, and cost-effective hydrogel-based alternatives made from renewable biomaterials. Aligned with EU sustainability strategies, these self-solidifying hydrogels are designed to release active drugs in response to external stimulation, with the goal of improving healing, preventing infection, and accelerating fracture repair.
The two-day meeting brought together all 13 partners of this Horizon Europe consortium to review progress, align on upcoming milestones, and strengthen collaboration across work streams.
We thank the Politecnico di Torino team for the excellent organization and hospitality, and we look forward to continuing our work within the HYDROHEAL project alongside all partners.
